Where young families, eccentric artists, Historians and happy Hipsters converge. This could possibly sum up Midtown. If you fall into one of these categories, this is the place for you! Hop off the porch and come along with me on a little stroll through these adorable streets. Our trip begins as we head South on Old Government, taking in the beautiful Gulf Cottages and quaint homes interspersed with two story French and Spanish inspired beauties.  Mobile is, after all, a gorgeous gumbo of European architectural and cultural influences and traditions. It can be felt hanging in the air on the 300 year old Spanish moss covered Live Oaks that line these streets.  It can be seen in the architecture and tasted in the many cafes and coffee shops along the way. As we pass boutiques, salons, and Southern cooking establishments we come to an odd sight indeed: a huge Columbiad type, seacoast defense canon which points East and could be at any time swathed in blue and gold or a bright orange- even the occasional pink! This cannon, once used to defend Fort Morgan during the Civil War, was originally brought from its fortress as a symbol of peace (read more about it here midtownmobile). Today it often serves as an indicator of the winning team in the annual "Battle for the Cannon" playoff between Mobile's rival high schools, McGIll-Toolen and Murphy. It is also stands at the demarcation line between Midtown and Downtown. Directly across the street is a swath of green in the middle of the slow rumble of Midtown's streets.  Memorial Park, dedicated in 1926, as a memorial to the men and women who served in World War II, is serene.  It has recently undergone a face lift, and is one of many Mobile Parks and historic buildings benefiting from our city's recent revival and strong economy. Its new landscaping, improved lighting and walkways, benches, marble columns and lovely fountain feature, often beckon new brides to walk over from The Pillars across the street to have their pictures taken.  A tourist visiting for the first time may find it quite baffling to see a bride and groom, in full regalia, tip toeing across Government Street towards a classic Southern backdrop with a bright orange or blue cannon looming in the background.  But such is life here in the Deep South; full of humor and mystery! Don't miss the aforementioned event site, The Pillars, for your next catered event. Built in 1910, this two story Historic beauty with commanding white columns gracing its facade, has been a grand home, a fine dining restaurant, and is now a formal event site, as well as host to a monthly local artisan's farmers market.  Afterwards, we can sip on a European-crafted coffee at Chaleur Method Brew and Espresso. Or we can stumble into LUSH for beautiful home decor, or perhaps to take a class in flower arranging or abstract art. Sounds like a lot to do in just a few blocks, so I wouldn't feel bad if you decided to ride your bike. You may want to join Mobilians on Bikes for more extensive tours of your new hood, all without wearing down your sneakers.  Either way you do it, you need to see authentic Midtown. No matter who you are, you will love living here!
